263,000 more jobs lost last month

Wall Street seemed shocked and dismayed by today’s news that the American economy lost over a quarter of a million more jobs last month, putting the breaks on recent claims that the economy has finally bottomed out and begun to rebound. With a trillion dollars spent on a “stimulus” package and the government virtually taking over the auto and banking industries, one would have expected better – unless one had even a tiny shred of common sense and a basic understanding of history.

Government bailouts and takeovers of private companies have never worked anywhere they have ever been tried, yet somehow President Obama and the Democrats controlling both houses of Congress thought they would give it a whirl anyway. And now they want to socialize the nation’s health care system which amounts to one-sixth of our domestic economy? Give me a break!

The best thing any government can do when its free-market economy takes a slide is to get further out of the way (by lowering taxes and easing regulations) and let the most successful economic system known to man pull its own self up by its bootstraps. Putting our grandchildren into ever-deeper debt by spending trillions on a less than worthless “stimulus” package is no way to boost the economy and create jobs.

Businesses and the investors that finance them create real, long-lasting and high paying jobs, not the army of politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, DC. History has proven that to be the case over and over again. Will our elected officials never learn?

Gmail messages now pushed directly to your cell phone with Google Sync

For some time now mobile Internet users could access their Gmail accounts with their cell phones by visiting the Gmail website and logging in, but now Google Sync will push your Gmail messages directly to your phone. This means those important messages will no longer have to wait until you get around to checking your email. You can instruct Google Sync to have them arrive automatically on your phone just like your text messages.

Google Sync features a couple of other cool applications as well, but in my opinion the “Gmail push” function will quickly become the most popular of the three. For more information about Google Sync visit this page on the Google website.

Malware infections up by 15% in September

Panda Security, the company that distributes the highly-rated Panda Anti-Virus software package has released the results of a study that shows that the number of malware infections increased 15% during the month of September. With all the attention the current epidemic of spam, viruses, trojans and the like is garnering these days you would think the problem should be getting better instead of worse, but apparently that is not the case.

I personally have noticed an almost daily increase in the amount of spam and phishing attempts that hit my inbox throughout the day, even with a great many filters and message rules in place. I have also noticed that I have to be very careful when using a search engine lately because of a proliferation of fake, malware-laden sites that are now showing up in the search results. Much of this troublesome malware originates overseas which makes it difficult for our legal system to do anything about it, but some say that the majority of it originates right here in the good ole USA.

Instead of wasting massive amounts of time and trillions of taxpayer dollars tilting against windmills, our elected Don Quixotes (ie. our Congressmen and Senators) should get busy finding ways to effectively stop the purveyors of this garbage in their tracks. And as tough as it might be to accomplish on a political level, there are also a number of technological steps that can be taken to at least minimize the amount of garbage that makes its way into our country from other nations. But we send those folks to Washington to do exactly that – make the tough decisions and do the right thing to make life better for the American people. Ok, enough talk from the soapbox…

The bottom line is malware threats are becoming both more pervasive and more sinister, and each of us must take the steps necessary to guard our computers, our personal privacy and our identities. Be careful when opening your emails, performing Internet searches and clicking links. One bad click can ruin your whole day – or worse.

The Empire State Building honors Communist China

This is truly a sad day for all freedom-loving Americans. For some inexplicable reason the folks in charge of the iconic Empire State Building in New York City lit up the top floors of the building in red this evening to honor the Chinese communist regime’s 60th anniversary of rule over the world’s most populous nation. What kind of signal does this send to our friends and foes around the globe? That America respects the brutal regime and approves of their atrocious human rights record and policies?

This despicable event took place in the heart of downtown Manhattan, the financial capitol of the most successful free market driven nation in history. Empire State Building manager Joseph Bellina called the lights “a high honor” and said he was proud of the relationship between “our countries and our people.” It’s enough to make any freedom-loving person ill.

It’s hard to imagine our culture retreating any farther away from the pinnacle of noble ideals established by our nation’s founders than they have already, but it seems like it’s something new every day. Like I said, this is truly a sad day for all freedom-loving Americans.

Supreme Court to hear challenge to Chicago’s handgun ban

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case challenging the city of Chicago’s ban on handguns, and I predict that the ban will ultimately be overturned. In a previous case the High Court ruled that individuals have a Constitutional right to bear arms under the 2nd Amendment, nullifying a similar ban on handguns in the nation’s capitol.

Anti-gun activists however assert that the Washington, DC ruling doesn’t apply to other U.S. cities because Washington is a federal entity which is not a part of any of the 50 states. In effect they are claiming that the right to bear arms guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution only applies at the federal level. I say hogwash…

It’s clear to this country boy that the founders of our great nation intended for the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution to trump any and all laws and regulations enacted by any subordinate jurisdiction – states, cities and counties included. If there is a conflict between a “local” law and the U.S. Constitution, the provision outlined in the Constitution overrides that law every time. It’s really that simple.

Given the current makeup of the Supreme Court, I find it hard to believe that such an obvious contradiction between the 2nd Amendment and local handgun bans will be allowed to stand. I fully expect that when the Court finally decides the case we’ll see a sweeping ruling that puts to bed once and for all any contention that the 2nd Amendment means anything less than exactly what it says.

Gaming PC’s

Computer games and those who play them have come a long way since the early days of home computing. Back in the day, playing a game every now and then was something you did to pass the time, because…well, you had a computer. But nowadays there is a thriving industry consisting of computer companies that build PC’s solely for gaming, and nothing else.

Gamers are a rather interesting bunch of folks. They’ll gladly spend three times what it would cost to purchase a top-of-the-line business machine just to have a gaming PC decked out with a super-fast, water-cooled, over-clocked CPU backed up with enough memory and hard drive space to equip a 1990′s era mainframe. And of course we can’t forget about the $500 video card required to display all of those amazing graphics at something approaching the speed of light.

I have seen people work hard all week, and then cash their paycheck and spend virtually all of it on a faster and better accessory for their computer. There’s nothing at all wrong with that mind you – after all, it’s their money and they are certainly entitled to spend it any way they see fit. I’m just saying that gamers are dedicated folks, and it seems that there will never be an “upgrade” that finally fulfills their inherent desires to own the best gaming PC on the block.

Of course I like playing games on my computer as well because they help me relax on occasion, but I tend to stick with the “free” ones that come with Windows. Solitaire – yeah, that’s the ticket!

But I must admit that it’s sometimes fun to pick up a computer magazine and check out the ads for gaming machines and all their expensive add-ons, because it sort of puts the things that are truly important to us in the proper perspective. And if what’s important to you is having the fastest, most powerful gaming machine on the block, then have at it!

Why NOW is the time to buy a house

With the economy in the tank at the moment, most people are running scared, saving every penny they can just in case they lose their jobs. But if you’ve been wanting to buy a house, assuming you can afford one (and qualify for the financing) now is the perfect time to go house hunting.

The near-collapse of the banking and real estate sectors of the economy have caused home prices to drop to their lowest levels in years. But when the economy picks back up (probably after the up-coming mid-term elections) they’ll begin going back up, as will interest rates.

Foreclosures are rampant right now, and it might seem that buying a house that someone else has lost just isn’t right, but that isn’t the right way to look at the situation. Whether you buy or not, SOMEONE will pick up these bargains, so it might as well be you. After all, your passing up a great deal will in no way help the poor folks who have lost their homes.

All things considered, RIGHT NOW is the best time to buy a house if you can afford one (and if you feel pretty secure in your job).

Support for Obama’s health care plan at an all-time low

According to the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey, public support for President Obama’s health care overhaul plan is still sinking like a rock. Nationwide, a mere 41% of Americans now approve of the health care plan being rammed down their throats by the Democrats in Congress and the White House.

For months the Democrats have asserted that the “minority” opposing health care reform were doing so because the President hadn’t done a good enough job at making his case with the American people, but it’s now quite clear that the more he talks about it, the less they like it. It’s also crystal clear that the folks who oppose the plan are in no way a minority as today’s Rasmussen poll shows. The Democrats in Congress would be wise to come to grips with the fact that if only 41% of the nation as a whole approves of the plan, then the group opposing it MUST include a great number of Democrat voters – probably more than enough to easily send a lot of Democrats packing come the mid-term elections.

Considering numbers like these, it’s hard for this country boy to figure out exactly why the Democrats in the House and Senate aren’t running away from this plan at a full sprint. My only guess is they are apparently willing to sacrifice their own cushy jobs in Washington in order to make sure that President Obama “succeeds” at his. Come to think of it, that wouldn’t be a bad thing, especially since the same poll shows that Obama’s personal approval rating has now dipped below 50% for the first time.

The Republicans are beginning to smell blood, and the Democrats simply don’t know when to drop their swords in order to save their own political hides. Politically, 2010 and 2012 are shaping up to be rather interesting years.

Microsoft Security Essentials to ship on September 29

Microsoft has announced that their long-awaited Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus software will be available as a free download sometime on Tuesday, September 29. MSE is being touted as a FREE replacement for the ill-fated Windows Live One Care anti-malware suite, but according to most beta testers MSE seems to be a much better program overall.

I’ve been rather critical of Microsoft software in the past (especially Windows), but I must say that most everything I’ve heard about this new security product has been extremely favorable. About the only complaint I’ve heard so far is about the scan speed (apparently it’s a little slower than most other free anti-virus apps), but I have a hunch that this area is one that Microsoft has been tweaking of late. And even if the final version still runs malware scans a little slow, the fact that MSE performs its automatic scans only when the computer is otherwise idle should make it pretty much a non-issue.

Since no other company in the computer security business knows more than Microsoft about the various threats facing Windows-based computers, I expect Security Essentials to be quite capable at protecting Windows machines from malware – and reports from the beta testers seem to bear that out.

MSE has been in beta since June, but the official download button on the Microsoft website has been inactive for a while now, leaving many of the folks who are eager to try it out (myself included) disappointed that we weren’t able to take part in the beta program. But within a few short hours the wait will be over. I plan to download and install it just as soon it becomes available, and I’ll follow up in a few days with my overall impression of the software.

Update: It’s live – click here to download Microsoft Security Essentials.

The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

When I was a youngster, one of the first things the teacher “taught” us at the beginning of each school year was The Golden Rule. In order to make it easy for the younger kids to remember, the teacher usually paraphrased it something along the lines of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And remember it we did. But nowadays kids aren’t being taught the message that Christ was teaching in the famous passage of Mathew 7:12, and for all too many of them it shows in their attitudes towards their peers, family members and authority figures.

In this modern age of “tolerance”, kids are being taught to accept as normal all varieties of abnormal behavior, but somehow they are missing the important lesson that they need to respect others because we were all made in God’s image. Instead of learning that each and every human being has an intrinsic value inherited from our common Creator, they are being taught that our society’s basis of respect should be “tolerance” for those who are different from them. It makes no difference to the educational establishment what those differences are or how much they deviate from traditional and moral norms, they are still to be respected at face value because anything less would be “discrimination”.

As a result, many of our kids are now growing up with a strong sense of entitlement (i.e. selfishness) instead of the once-universal belief that everyone deserves the same fighting chance at achieving happines and success in life. Anything goes as long as the end result is getting what WE want and living the type of lifestyle WE want to live, regardless of how much those things deviate from our nation’s Christian heritage.

I believe that’s why we see so many kids getting into trouble on a scale that was simply unimaginable even 25 years ago, and until our schools go back to teaching the fundamentals that I and those who came before me grew up with (starting with The Golden Rule), things are only going to keep getting worse.
