Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu plugin for WordPress

If you run a self-hosted WordPress blog, you probably agree that WordPress’ default Admin user interface isn’t exactly the easiest thing in the world to use. I used to absolutely dread firing up WordPress in order to write a post, install a plugin, or perform some type of maintenance function on my WordPress installation, but not anymore. Now I use Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu, a great plugin that turns the WordPress admin area into an easy to understand and ridiculously easy-to-use tool.

I have used Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu on all of my WordPress blogs for some time now, and I highly recommend it if you are looking for an easy way to streamline your blogging activities. The easiest way to find out more about the plugin and install it is to log in to your WordPress admin panel and click on Plugins and Add New. Then simply type “Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu” into the search box.

Alternatively, you can click here to visit the plugin author’s website where you’ll find all kinds of unseful information and tips on this great script.

Mawson’s long-lost plane and Global Warming

Way back in 1911 an Australian adventurer named Douglas Mawson decided that he wanted to be the first man to fly an airplane over the South Pole. If successful, Mawson’s feat would have been incredible given the fact that it had been just 8 short years since the Wright Brothers made their legendary “first flight” at Kitty Hawk, NC. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Upon arrival in Antarctica, Mawson quickly discovered that the engine on his Vickers monoplane simply wouldn’t start in the extreme cold. Dejected, he removed the engine from the fuselage and headed back home to Australia, leaving the doomed plane sitting on the ice near the bottom of the world. During the century that followed, snow and ice built up around the abandoned plane until it finally disappeared from view beneath a blanket of white.

Researchers have been searching for the remnants of Mawson’s plane for decades, and they recently uncovered it after spotting sections of the tubular frame sticking out of the ice. Global warming proponents insist that the find backs up their claim that the earth is heating up due to human interference with nature. I couldn’t disagree more.

If the plane became covered with ice after it was abandoned in 1911, wouldn’t that mean that the place where the plane sits had less ice then than it has now? Did Mr. Mawson instruct his crew to dig a huge hole in the ice and bury the plane? I think not.

The fact of the matter is, our planet goes through cycles of cooling and heating, and some of those cycles are quite severe. There have been at least two ice ages that we humans know about during which most of North America was completely covered with a thick sheet of ice. What caused the “global warming” that melted all of that ice each time? Somehow I doubt that the people who inhabited the planet during the ice ages drove around in gas guzzling SUV’s and mowed their ice-encrusted lawns with Briggs & Stratton powered lawnmowers.

I find it quite ironic and amusing that Al Gore’s speech at the recent “Climate Change Summit” in Copenhagen, Denmark was delayed due to a blizzard. And it’s even more ironic that he returned home to a United States of America that has just seen many parts of the country break the all-time record for the most consecutive days below freezing!

Folks, climate change is indeed real – make no mistake about it. Weather patterns and ambient temperatures have been changing for eons, sometimes to great extremes. These cyclical changes are entirely natural, and they are to be expected by anyone who has ever read a 6th grade textbook on natural history. Was Mr. Gore absent on the day when the teacher covered the ice ages, or does he simply enjoy raking in millions of dollars by perpetrating a fraud of global proportions? My guess would be the latter.

Remembering the King…

It’s hard to believe, but today marks the 75th anniversary of the birth of one of America’s most beloved entertainers, the one and only Elvis Presley. Many talented impersonators put on shows that are remarkably reminiscent of the King himself, but no one can match Elvis’ charisma and raw talent.

Elvis was much more than just an entertainer, he was a good man and a great American. Sadly, his greatness is overshadowed in the minds of many by the way he died. It’s easy to forget that the man who eventually became the brightest star in music history got his humble start singing gospel songs in church. And even as his popularity rose to unprecedented heights, he never forgot about God or shied away from thanking Him in public for giving him the talent that allowed him to achieve such stardom.

It’s also easy to forget that he made the patriotic decision to serve his country after being drafted into the U.S. Army just as his career began to burst through the stratosphere, even though he could easily have found a way to avoid it given his fame and powerful connections. Elvis’ fans wrote letters to the draft board by the thousands begging them to spare him from having to serve on active duty, but he answered the draft notice anyway and dutifully served his country for the two years it asked of him. Did he receive special treatment during his time in service? Undoubtedly. But he served, proudly wearing the uniform of the United States Army when others of his stature would have declined.

After his stint in the Army, Elvis re-entered civilian life and immediately picked up where he had left off as an entertainer. Even though some aspects of his later years in the business would become fodder for comedians the world over, troubles and all he was still a good man and a good American. The records he set and the firsts he achieved during his amazing career are now legendary, and even all these years after his death the King continues to be larger than life, “earning” more each year than many of the “stars” clawing their way up the charts today will earn in a lifetime.

When Elvis Presley died the world lost one of the greatest entertainers it would ever know. The video that follows is but a mere snapshot of the man and his amazing life.

How to display any photo as your PC’s desktop background

You have no doubt seen computers with pretty photos displayed as their desktop backgrounds, and you might be wondering how to do the same on your own PC with a favorite picture. Well, it’s really so simple that even a caveman could do it (sorry GEICO)…

Simply right-click on the photo you wish to use as your desktop background image, then click “Set as Background“ on the menu that pops up. That’s it, you’re done. From this moment forward (at least until you change it) you’ll see little Fluffy smiling back at you every time you sit down to use your computer!

Kindle DX with Global Wireless

When Amazon released its Kindle ebook reader, few among us realized just how popular it would soon turn out to be. The Kindle even exceeded Amazon’s own expectations by becoming the best selling product on the entire site.

And another amazing milestone was set just last year: Ebooks outsold hard copy books on Amazon for the very first time in 2009! Following up on that success, Amazon has now announced the second generation of the now-famous Kindle.

The Kindle DX with Gobal Wireless builds upon the features that made its successor so popular by increasing the size of the screen from 6 inches to 9.7. It also boasts enough storage to hold up to 3,500 books and the ability to download content wirelessly in over 100 countries.

Ebooks are the wave of the future and the Kindle appears to be the ebook reader of choice. Click here to learn more about the Kindle DX with Gobal Wireless on the Amazon website.

Hate junk mail? Let me tell you about Greendimes.

If you’re like me, you probably dread opening your mailbox because you know it’s probably going to be filled to the brim with junk mail and catalogs that you’ll just end up just throwing in the garbage or recycling. I suppose that sending ton after ton of  junk mail pays off for the advertisers because they sure keep on doing it, but I believe that most people are fed up with it clogging their mailboxes and wasting their valuable time as they are forced to deal with it.

Well, I just read an article about a company that is dedicated to ending the scourge of junk mail once and for all. In fact, the stated mission of Pankaj Shah’s Greendimes is to put itself out of business by putting an end to the junk mail advertising industry as it currently exists. If they are ultimately successful in that endeavor, checking the mail will be a much more pleasant experience than it is today, and millions of trees won’t have to be cut in order to produce it. I’m certainly not one of those folks who spends every waking moment fretting over the environment, but sawing down millions of trees to produce countless tons of junk mail that has little chance of even being read seems crazy to me. I wish Mr. Shah and Greendimes well in their mission.

The nature of human nature

If you’ve been living on planet earth long enough to be able to feed yourself, you have no doubt been shocked and disappointed by the actions or words of someone you thought you knew really well. As we get to know the people around us, we begin to get a handle on their personalities and attitudes. When we finally get to the point where we’re real close to someone, we tend to believe that we know pretty well how that person will react in any given situation. But sometimes that belief turns out to be based on a false assumption.

Over the course of my lifetime I have seen a number of close friends and loved ones catch me completely off guard with the way they handled situations that seemed to me to be rather routine (and I’m sure it’s happened the other way around as well). It’s natural to be shocked and even disappointed when that happens, but it really shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, each of us is an individual who brings our own assumptions, biases, personal experiences and memories of past injustices along with us as we interact with the people around us, and as such we all have our own ways of dealing with situations and circumstances as they arise. And that doesn’t make us bad people, it just makes us different.

Human nature being as it is, most people will treat others well, follow the rules established by society, and act in a more or less predictable manner in most areas of their lives. But each of us has the ability – maybe even the propensity – to catch others off-guard with our actions and reactions to situations that arise from time to time. We’re only human after all, and humans are prone to cause each other grief on occasion. But we also have the God-given ability to empathize and forgive. May God give us all the wisdom to know when it’s best to do just that.

Knockout Entrepreneur by George Foreman

Title: Knockout Entrepreneur
Author: George Foreman
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 978-0785222088
Pages: 240

George Foreman has reached a level of success that most Americans can only dream about, both as a boxer and an entrepreneur. As a two-time Heavyweight Champion of the World and one of the most succesful businessmen of the modern era, this man has clearly demonstrated that he has the will, determination and “smarts” to succeed at most anything he tries to do.

When I first saw Knockout Entrepreneur on display in my local bookstore, my first thought was “Will anyone realy take a former boxing champ seriously as a business guru?” But after thinking about it for a moment, I realized that he has been just as successful in his long business career as he was as a fighter. That’s when I decided to read the book and review it for the Thomas Nelson “Book Review Blogger” program.

As a sports fan, I could go on and on about the stories Mr. Foreman tells about some of his biggest boxing matches (they alone are worth the price of this book), but it’s the way he relates these stories to the principles of business success that make the book such an engaging and valuable read. In a nutshell, he explains how his drive to excel combined with his firm foundation in Christian principles helped him achieve all of his goals, and more.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in pursuing a successful career in business, especially self-starters who have a burning desire to work for themselves. Sports enthusiast or not, you’re sure to benefit from Mr. Foreman’s many wonderful tips and insights into living a successful life and succeeding in the business world.

How to force all links to open in a new window

Many of today’s bandwidth-intensive multi-media websites take forever to load, even with a fast Internet connection. This is primarily due to scripts running in the background and/or ads being served from an external server. One of the most frustrating things about browsing sites like this is the time it takes to return to where you left off after you click the “Back” button. There is an easy way to avoid this wait however…

Simply hold down the Ctrl key when you click on a link and the new page will open in a new window. When you’re finished reading the content on that page, simply click the “X” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen to close the window and you’ll find your original page still waiting for you with the cursor in the exact same spot as when you left it!
