Rain, rain, go away…

Remember the old saying “Rain, rain, go away, come again another day.”? Well, last summer you wouldn’t have heard very many people reciting that old saw with the drought and all, but this July has turned out to be quite soggy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. Rain is a wonderful thing, and we should always be glad to get it considering the fact that all life on planet earth depends on H2O for its very survival. But right now it’s a little difficult to get our yard work done or get outdoors for some rest and relaxation.

The rainy weather is also wreaking havoc with this year’s Virginia Highlands Festival over in beautiful Abingdon, Virginia. Every July and August Old Abingdon comes alive for two weeks with hundreds of artisans displaying their handiwork for all to admire, and bands from near and far treating the festival goers to a wide variety of great music. Abingdon is usually packed with automobiles and pedestrians about now, but all the rain showers are keeping the crowds smaller than usual. There’s always next year of course, and maybe the last week of the festival will turn out somewhat better. But for now at least things could definitely be a lot better weather wise.

But the unkempt lawns and soggy festival notwithstanding, we really can’t complain too much about the wet July we’re slogging through here in the southeastern United States. After all, just last year many towns and cities found themselves facing a critical shortage of water, and there sure weren’t too many people going around muttering to themselves “Rain, rain go away, come again another day.”

Like the air we breathe and the food we eat, rain is a gift from God. We should never take it for granted or try to wish it away.
