It’s been a while since I last shopped for a hard disk drive (like 2 years?), so I was thoroughly shocked to discover just how low their prices have fallen since then. What’s more, the storage capacities on even the lowest priced models are beginning to reach into the technological stratosphere.
I remember way back when I purchased my very first computer. That ancient TRS-80 Model I came equipped with a cassette tape drive for program and data storage, but a 5.25″ floppy disk drive with a maximum capacity of 160 Kilobytes – yes, that’s Kilobytes with a K – was optional at a price of $499.
A short while later Radio Shack stood the home computer market on its ear by offering a 5 Megabyte hard disk drive for a whopping $4,995! Think about that for a moment: A measly 5 Megabytes of hard disk storage went for almost $5,000!
Browsing around the Internet this afternoon I found loads of 500 Gigabyte hard drives to be had for less than $100, and those were the “expensive” external models. 1 Terabyte models are available for less than $200.
With prices and storage capacities like these, there is really no reason why most people should ever run out of hard drive space again. Need more storage for your gigantic photo, audio and video files? Simply buy another USB external hard drive and you’re back in business in minutes! Simply amazing.
Remarkable.
