My turn at catching a virus

A couple of days ago I chronicled my latest battle with a computer virus, but right now I’m battling one of my own. And I sort of had a feeling that it was coming…

On Thursday evening I dropped my granddaughter Olivia off at basketball practice, then returned 90 minutes later to pick her up. While I was standing beside the door waiting for practice to wrap up, one of her young teammates walked by, obviously ill and holding her stomach. Just as she walked by, she let go with a huge cough, and since she was so close to me I had a sinking feeling that I might soon be catching whatever she had. And so I did.

Last night I began feeling poorly, and before long I was experiencing all the “discomfort” that goes along with being sick (I’ll spare you the details). I guess that just goes to show how easy it is to pass along a virus to someone else. I’m not blaming the young gal who gave it to me. After all, she couldn’t help being sick and it was quite obvious that the cough surprised her just as much as it did me. I guess I should have went back to the doctor for that flu shot after all…

Anyway, I’m feeling a little better this morning - and my computer is too, so with any luck this weekend will still turn out ok.

Those aggravating computer viruses

Well, it has happened yet again. It seems like about once a month or so my work PC ends up catching a virus, a trojan horse, or some other piece of malware. Today it was a virus, and it was a particularly nasty one.

First of all, it corrupted one of the most important Windows XP system files which rendered the system unbootable. In fact, it wouldn’t even boot into Safe Mode. After much tweaking, I was finally able to get it to boot into the “Command Prompt” version of Safe Mode which allowed me to overwrite the corrupted file with a copy of the one from my laptop. That fixed the booting problem, but…

When the PC booted up into Windows, my anti-virus software real-time protection mode wouldn’t activate, ultimately leaving me with no choice but to uninstall the program and then re-install it. Talk about a hassle! At first the corrupted anti-virus installation refused to be uninstalled (thanks to the virus that caused the problem in the first place), but after manually removing a couple of files it finally agreed to ride off into the sunset.

I then downloaded a fresh installation package for the anti-virus program from the vendor’s website and began the install process, only to have it fail – not once, but three times! The fourth time was a charm however, and after the installation was complete I initiated a full scan of all drives. That scan is still in progress some 45 minutes later, so I’m actually writing this little diatribe on my laptop.

Hopefully the scan will find and remove the offending virus(s) and all will be well. If not, I suppose a hard drive format will be next on the agenda.

I know exactly how I got the virus – I got it the same way I always get them…

I receive anywhere from 300-400 emails per day, and most of them are spam or contain attachments that I have no interest in opening. When I hold down the CTRL key to select them all for deletion, every so often all of those “bad” emails will simply open up all on their own, allowing any attached viruses to install at their leisure. You gotta love Microsoft Windows!

Well, today one of those nefarious emails obviously contained a virus, and now I’m having to clean up one doozy of a mess. I guess that’s the price I have to pay for having my email address splattered all over the web on the websites that I maintain, but I really have no choice in the matter. For now at least, I’m at the mercy of the email harvesting robots and the good folks from Microsoft.

Ford cars now running Microsoft Windows

How’s this for a scary thought? Several of Ford’s 2009 model vehicles will be running Sync, a communications and entertainment software platform based largely upon Microsoft Windows CE technology. Yep, the two companies have indeed joined forces to bring the world of computer crashes and endless security holes onto the world’s highways.

At least a couple of times a week my HP computer running Windows XP ”freezes up” and I have to do a hard reboot (AKA disconnect the power cord), losing any unsaved data in the process, and the problem is even worse on Cheria’s whiz-bang Gateway running Windows Vista (is that long-overdue ”Service Pack” ready yet guys?). It sends chills up my spine knowing that such an unstable technology is now going to be in use on millions of vehicles around the world!

Even though the the Ford/Microsoft Sync technology will initially be used only for non-critical functions such as making phone calls and listening to music, does anyone really believe that it won’t eventually make it into the cars’ more important functions. “Oops, I know you meant to turn right but the wheels turned left instead – must be a bug in the software. No problem, just try to get back in your own lane and then pull over and “reboot”. You might want to drop by the dealership and have the latest critical updates installed!”

Maybe I’m just being a little paranoid here, but the guys from Redmond haven’t exactly done a whole lot to instill confidence in their products over the years - and things don’t seem to be getting any better. Ford had better wade into these new waters carefully or foreign competition, high wages, and a weak dollar will be the least of their problems.

The difference between believing in Jesus and being saved

Having grown up under the sound of the gospel, I have always heard folks refer to those who have been saved as “Believers”, but are all believers actually saved? The surprising answer is no. After all, satan himself is a huge believer in Jesus as the Son of the Living God because he dealt with Him on a one-to-one basis several times while the Saviour walked upon the earth. But his belief certainly doesn’t mean he has been saved.

There are also plenty of humans who believe in Jesus and His Godly status who will ultimately end up in hell nonetheless. For example, consider a person who has come under the conviction of the Holy Ghost. He has already come to the realization that he is a sinner and that only the acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour will keep him out of eternal hell.

But although this person now believes in Jesus and that He is the only way to eternal life, until he actually takes action to confess his sins and ask for forgiveness, his sins still have not been covered by the blood – he is still lost. And if this “believer” should die before he gets around to actually accepting Jesus as his Saviour he will die and go to hell.

This is why it is imperative that a person who is under conviction make that move right away without putting it off. It’s bad enough when someone who doesn’t believe in Jesus dies in their sins, but it’s even worse when a “believer” does so.

The accuracy of political polls

You know, sometimes things just don’t turn out as expected. If you don’t believe me, just ask Barack Obama.

All the polls taken right before last Tuesday’s Democratic Presidential Primary election in New Hampshire indicated that Mr. Obama would easily defeat top rival Hillary Clinton, perhaps even by a double-digit margin. What’s more, exit polls taken throughout the day right up until the polls closed seemed to confirm it. But then the actual results started coming in from the various precincts…

Clinton got off to an early lead, but the pundits and pollsters shrugged it off by saying that Obama’s stronghold precints in the western half of the state and the major college towns had yet to begin reporting their results. Cheria and I sat there in our den throughout the evening watching the coverage, expecting to eventually see Obama start to close the gap. It never happened.

When it was all said and done, Clinton had managed to maintain her steady lead until the very end, leaving her just as surprised at the win as everyone else. After all, in the days between Iowa and New Hampshire her campaign appeared to be floundering, and all day long there had been speculation that a major shakeup was in the works for the following day.

I think the accuracy of political polls really boils down to two questions:

  1. Are the operators calling the right people?
  2. Are they asking them the right questions?

It appears that in this case the answer to both questions was probably no. It’s actually pretty common for one or two pollsters to miss the mark on occasion with the rest of them “getting it right”, but on Tuesday everyone got it wrong, including the pollsters working for the campaigns themselves!

That’s why it is so important for voters to get out and cast their ballots even if the polls indicate a handy win or defeat for the candidate they are backing. You just never know when an expected blowout will turn out to be a squeaker, and just a vote or two really can make the difference.

“Country Roads”

“Country roads, take me home
To the place, I belong…”

If you’re like me, there are probably a number of songs that were popular back when you were a child that have stuck in your mind through the years, always ready and waiting to spur a special memory or two every time you hear them on the radio. For me, the wonderful old hymn “Amazing Grace” leads the list, but a close second would have to be the John Denver classic “Country Roads”.

I grew up in the 1970′s in the small rural southwestern Virginia community of Widener Valley, and back then most of the roads in that area were narrow and crooked, barely wide enough in many places for two cars to pass by steering one set of wheels onto the shoulder. It seemed like it took forever to “get to town”, and this bored little boy would sit and stare out the car window as the trees, hills and mountains slowly passed into and out of view.

I was all of 11 years old when Mr. Denver released his smash hit “Country Roads”, and I loved to sing along to the catchy tune even as I was dreaming of the day when I could finally leave the country roads that I knew so well behind and make my way to a more exciting part of the world. For me, there was no magic whatsoever in the way those crooked ribbons of dusty gravel and cracked asphalt snaked their way around hills, up and down “hollers”, and across the rushing waters of crystal-clear streams.

No, it would be much later in life before I finally came to fully appreciate just how much God had blessed me by allowing me to grow up in such a beautiful and special place.

Sure enough, the day came when I was finally able to live my dream of leaving Widener Valley behind, and over the course of several years I found myself living in a number of places across the country and around the world. And you know what? I never found another place that was as beautiful, friendly and peaceful as the one I had left behind back in the “hills and hollers” of southwestern Virginia!

Well, a few years ago I managed to live another dream of mine – the dream of “going home”. Most of those old country roads are a little wider and straighter these days, but I love every single mile of them. And every time I hear John Denver’s voice croon the words to “Country Roads”, I thank God for allowing them to take me home.

Politics, politics, politics…

Well, the 2008 Presidential race is now in full swing, and as usual the field is a bit crowded in both major political parties. A couple of also-rans dropped out of the running on the Democratic side immediately following last Thursday’s Iowa Caucuses, and I also expect to see a “thinning of the herd” after the dust settles in New Hampshire tomorrow evening.

This year we Americans will go to the polls in one of the most important elections our nation has ever held, and I must say that I still haven’t made up my mind about who to support at this point. During every election cycle we are treated to plenty of mudslinging, and I look for this one to be even nastier than usual. I absolutely deplore negative campaigning, but these days it is simply par for the course.

For me, there are several key issues that will ultimately determine who I end up voting for:

1 – Which candidate has the most experience, the “steeliest” determination, and the best overall plan for doing whatever it takes to defeat our nation’s enemies, both here and abroad?

2 – Which candidate will be most likely to do whatever it takes to seal our borders and stop illegal aliens (criminals, by definition) from coming here, um… illegally?

3 – Which candidate is most likely to nominate Supreme Court Justices who will interpret the U.S. Constitution instead of “legislating from the bench”?

4 – Which candidate will follow an accurate moral compass and make decisions that are based upon traditional American values and Biblical principles?

Of course there are other issues that are important to me as well, but those are the biggies. Our electorate will face a very important crossroads on November 4, and if we make the wrong collective decision we will most surely end up going down a road that we’ll eventually regret taking.

In an age when ruthless terrorist regimes either have nuclear weapons already or are well on their way to attaining them, it is my hope and prayer that God will grant a clear majority of us the wisdom to make the right choice for the future of our country and our beloved way of life.

The Carter Family Fold

At the foot of Clinch Mountain in the tiny southwestern Virginia community of Hiltons sits a rather plain looking wooden building. It sprawls out on a hillside, and if you were driving by and happened to miss the sign you would think it was a barn. But trust me, this amazing building is like no other “barn” you have ever seen.

The Carter Family Fold was the brainchild of Janette Carter, daughter of A.P. and Sara who along with “Mother Maybelle” comprised the original Carter Family music group. The Carter Family changed the world of music forever in the late 1920′s and early 1930′s by creating a sound that would later influence many generations of singers and musicians in all genres.

A.P. Carter wrote or acquired the rights to hundreds of timeless mountain songs, a number of which have been recorded by literally dozens of singers and bands over the years. While on his deathbed in 1960, Mr. Carter asked a tearful Janette to promise to do everything she could to help keep the Carter Family’s music alive, and towards that end she and her “little” brother Joe established the Carter Fold in 1979.

From the Fold’s opening day until shortly before her January 2006 death, Janette welcomed a very large and enthusiastic crowd into the “country” concert hall every Saturday night, and not once did they leave feeling as if they had failed to get their money’s worth.

These days Janette’s daughter Rita Forrester hosts the weekly shows, but you can still get in for just $5 – the bargain of all bargains considering the superb level of entertainment provided each week!

Cheria and I had the opportunity to attend last night’s show, and as always we hated for the fun to stop when 10:15 rolled around. The McLain Family provided the entertainment, but I’m sure that Janette herself provided the inspiration and guidance that Rita used to run the show and keep her famous grandparents’ music alive.

Folks from all over the country and around the world descend upon the Carter Family Fold every Saturday night, and when they leave they always take a little bit of Janette’s southern charm and a better understanding of the Carter Family’s legacy along with them. Wonderful people and great music…what could possibly be better than that?

Putting on the armour of God

Ephesians 6:11-17

11 – Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 – Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 – Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 – And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 – Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 – And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Make no mistake about it, satan’s power far exceeds that of us humans, and he spends every second of every day trying his very best to keep the lost from accepting Christ as their personal Saviour and enticing those who are saved to sin and lose their testimonies.

The very essence of his being is supreme evil, and if we try to stand up to him on our own he will easily devour us and leave us in a state of untold misery and sorrow.

But the good news is we don’t have to face the devil all by ourselves. We have the Lord on our side, and even the great power of the prince of darkness is no match for us when we cloak ourselves in God’s invincible armor. If we will simply study God’s Word and ask Him to walk with us, guide us, and protect us, we can and will defeat the devil at each and every turn.

But satan knows we’re only human and that we’re likely to falter from time to time. That’s why we must be ever vigilant to stay within God’s will and constantly “suited up” for battle.

Publishing the “Picture of the Day”

As regular visitors to RickRouse.com surely know by now, one of my favorite pastimes is picking up my camera and heading off somewhere to take some pictures. I’m not a professional photographer, but every once in a while I do manage to capture a pretty decent image, and when I do I usually end up featuring it on TodaysPhoto.org as a “Picture of the Day”.

I published the very first ”Picture of the Day” on February 24, 2005, and ever since then I have published a different photograph each and every day along with a short “story” about it (background info, location, what made it special enough to warrant being selected as a POTD, etc.).

A lot of the featured pictures were taken by either Cheria or myself, but many others were taken by other photographers from all around the world. And while there are certainly a large number of professional-quality photographs on there, a good number of them are just average, taken by folks like me who simply enjoy taking pictures for the fun of it. I have never limited my choices to only the best of the best, but rather to photographs that strike a chord with me for one reason or another.

I suppose what really motivates me the most in keeping the “Picture of the Day” going is the way the endeavor allows me to not only tell you what I think and what I like, but to show you as well. I have always enjoyed sharing my thoughts and opinions with others (and vice versa), and the same goes for my “views” of the world in which we live as expressed through the art and science of photography.

If you have never checked out my “Picture of the Day” feature on TodaysPhoto.org before, I invite you to do so. And if you are at all intrigued by what you find there, I invite you to return every day to see the latest installment. And who knows? Maybe you’ll end up submitting a picture or two of your own!
